Long, long overdue (not that I’m complaining about the Doctor Who “classic series” DVD range’s policy of mixing up undisputed classics with undisputed not-quite-classics), The Brain Of Morbius is a welcome addition to my Doctor Who DVD shelf, bringing back a wealth of memories for me, perhaps moreso than any other Doctor Who story from any era of the show. For, you see, Morbius marked my first meeting with that time traveler from Gallifrey, way back in the late ’70s when my mother happened to notice the show airing on KTVT in Dallas (which was quite a long haul from Fort Smith, but happened to be on our cable system) and thought it would be a dandy addition to my staple diets of Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. I was hooked (and so was she) on the nightly broadcasts of the Tom Baker episodes in their original 25-minute form (though they were broken up by advertisements, since KTVT was a rare instance of a commercial, non-PBS station airing the show in America). The rest is history. (more…)
