Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries

TV Series, 0-9 / A-E, Science Fiction - reviewed on Monday, January 31, 2005 by Dave Thomer

Battlestar Galactica: The MiniseriesUntil about three weeks ago, I thought there was little to no chance I would ever say, “I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica.” The original series never made much of an impression on me, and the 2003 miniseries managed to slip under my radar despite the fan controversies. But then I started hearing very good buzz on the ongoing series from people watching the overseas broadcasts (or downloaded copies of said broadcasts). So I decided to start watching the Sci Fi broadcasts from the beginning, starting with their rebroadcast of the miniseries right before the series premiere.

I am now a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica. (more…)

Lexx 4.6

TV Series, K-O, Science Fiction, Lexx - reviewed on Monday, January 24, 2005 by Earl Green

Lexx 4.6 featuring the episodes Viva Lexx Vegas, Trip, Lyekka Vs. Japan and Yo Way Yo

So here we are, at the end of the Lexx saga. This final DVD in the series has some of season 4’s best, so it’s not that painful this time around.

If anything, Viva Lexx Vegas may well be the last gasp of the Lexx that I came to know and love - there’s hilarity, absurdity, jeopardy and innuendo all in the right doses. Of course, this would be expected of the crew’s visit to Sin City. (more…)

Peter Gabriel - Play: The Videos

Direct To DVD, P-T, Music - reviewed on Monday, January 17, 2005 by Earl Green

Peter Gabriel - Play: The VideosOrder this DVD I don’t go for too many music video collections on DVD. That said, it’s an ideal medium if a single artist or group releases their entire library that way, but in general I’m not a big fan of how the medium of the music video has evolved. I tend to like the more avant-garde, anything-goes approach of the early ’80s stuff, where literally hundreds of dollars were spent (but not thousands) on a single video - the more impressionistic stuff always caught my eye more than the “let’s make a small movie out of it” approach. But for a select few acts, I’m happy to see them put their entire video careers on DVD, and Peter Gabriel is certainly one of those. (more…)

Star Trek: Voyager - Season 4

TV Series, P-T, Science Fiction, Star Trek: Voyager - reviewed on Monday, January 10, 2005 by Earl Green

Star Trek: Voyager - Season 4Order this DVDBetween the third and fourth seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, it was announced that a new cast member was being added, and where the press was concerned (not that Paramount’s press material did anything to dampen this, mind you), the new character was described from day one as a “sexy Borg.” Jeri Ryan, formerly of the short-lived NBC paranormal series Dark Skies, was chosen for the role, though it’s generally well known now that while the fans seemed to be up in arms about Seven of Nine on a conceptual level, it was considered an attractive role in Hollywood - even Babylon 5 co-star Claudia Christian auditioned for the part, since she was at something of a loose end after allowing her contract to lapse with that series. Lexx 4.5

TV Series, K-O, Science Fiction, Lexx - reviewed on Monday, January 3, 2005 by Earl Green

Lexx 4.5featuring the episodes Dutch Treat, The Game, Haley’s Comet and Apocalexx Now

It is with great trepidation that I come to this volume, for it contains one of my personal favorites, as well as a segment that’s just irredeemably awful.

Dutch Treat is just plain weird, but enjoyably so. Any episode that culminates in a gigantic, city-sized bug-spaceship eating Holland in a single gulp can’t be all bad. (more…)
