Star Trek Volume 14featuring the episodes Errand Of Mercy and City On The Edge Of Forever

It’s hard to pinpoint when the original Star Trek really hit its stride, but man, if you’ve gotta have a benchmark, the last six or seven episodes of the first season aren’t a bad choice. In the space of the previous few episodes, we introduced Khan and Vulcan mind melds, and with this volume you can add the Klingons and the Guardian of Forever to the pantheon. (more…)

Babylon 5: The Complete Fourth Season

TV Series, 0-9 / A-E, Science Fiction, Babylon 5 - reviewed on Monday, March 22, 2004 by Dave Thomer

Babylon 5: The Complete Fourth SeasonAlthough Babylon 5 did complete its intended five year run, that final renewal didn’t come until after filming for the fourth season had concluded. Creator J. Michael Straczynski decided to hedge his bets slightly and wrap up the series’ major plot points. This gave the fourth season no end of intense high-stakes conflict, and although a few of those developments wound up feeling a little rushed, No Surrender, No Retreat is a satisfying climax to the Babylon 5 saga. Star Trek: Voyager - Season 1

Star Trek: Voyager - Season 1Order this DVD I was there, you see, at the dawning of the fourth age of Trek-kind. Working at a Fox affiliate at the time, which had recently undergone a bit of mitosis and spawned a second TV station which was earmarked from early on as a potential UPN station, I was more keenly aware of Star Trek: Voyager than I was of any Trek spinoff before it. I cringed at the hasty exit of Genevieve Bujold, and cringed again when the WB premiered a week ahead of UPN (though, again at the time, I predicted they’d never make it when their coolest offering was the series of Michigan J. Frog commercial bumpers and their lead program was a pale clone of Married…With Children). (more…)

The Matrix ReloadedFor those of you who just can’t get enough of the Burly Brawl, your day has come: The Matrix Reloaded is finally on DVD. For those of you who wanted the depth of bonus features that made the original Matrix DVD a killer-app of the digital video medium, you’re just going to have to take a number and wait. Speaking only for myself, I was looking forward to learning a lot about how the movie was made, listening to the complete original score, and more. And hey, it was two discs! How could they help but have buttloads of features on two DVDs? (more…)

Doctor Who - Earthshock

TV Series, 0-9 / A-E, Doctor Who (Classic), Science Fiction - reviewed on Monday, March 1, 2004 by Earl Green

Doctor Who - EarthshockDoctor Who - EarthshockOne of the jewels in the crown of the Davison era of Doctor Who, Earthshock is one of those who-shot-J.R. moments where everyone who saw it remembers where they where when they first saw part four. Boasting the most powerful and memorable exit that the series ever provided for one of the Doctor’s companions, Earthshock was the first real hint that Doctor Who was changing with the times - even moreso than the jarring change-in-style that The Leisure Hive represented. For, after years and years of Tom Baker’s nonchalant antics, we now had a Doctor who was capable of misjudging a situation critically - critically enough to seal the doom of one of his companions.
