Best known for Fawlty Towers, of course, but in recent years he’s done several Big Finish Doctor Who audios, include the McGann-ification of “Shada.” [LINK]
Andrew Sachs, who starred in the British television comedy series “Fawlty Towers” as Manuel, the earnest but bumbling waiter who was regularly recruited into the schemes of the hotel owner Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese, died on Nov. 23. He was 86.
His wife, Melody Lang, confirmed the death, at a private care home in West London, The Daily Mail of London reported. She told the newspaper that he learned four years that he had vascular dementia.
“Manuel’s tremendous positiveness is absolutely key to that character being funny,” Mr. Cleese said in an interview posted on YouTube.
On Twitter on Thursday, Mr. Cleese called Mr. Sachs a “kind man and a truly great farceur.”
I wasn’t aware that he was German. I saw a documentary about the show, and the German TV network that was dubbing Fawlty Towers into German asked him to come over and dub his character, since Andrew was fluent. It was weird to hear a goofy Spanish accent being performed in German. 😆
