How is it that I didn’t know Hojo had a new album out this year? What’s not a surprise is that it’s brilliant. Jones is good at uplifting music that isn’t sugar-coated or meaningless – it’s feel-good music in a “makes you happy to be alive and human” sort of vein.
It’s apparently tied to an intricate live show, and oddly the first track is basically the entire album in one track (in the live show’s running order). The individual tracks follow after that, so you basically hear the album twice. Strange. Good stuff, though – he’s still synth-centric and his musicianship is still off-the-scale, but he hasn’t stood still since the ’80s.
