This’ll either be awesome (i.e. bringing ThinkGeek stuff to a mall near you) or it’s gonna suck (i.e. less eclectic stuff from ThinkGeek because they won’t bother with stuff that isn’t “mainstream geek” anymore). [LINK]
Geeknet, Inc. (GKNT), the parent company of online retailers ThinkGeek and ThinkGeek Solutions, Tuesday said it would be acquired by Hot Topic, Inc., a mall and web-based specialty retailer and a portfolio company of private equity firm Sycamore Partners, for $17.50 per share.
I’d like to believe that ThinkGeek won’t be changed drastically, but we’re talking about Hot Topic, a store that caters to the lowest common denominator. They are polar opposites intellectually, if Hot Topic’s parent company starts fiddling with ThinkGeek, I can imagine a disaster. Or maybe I’m wrong about their intentions.
