Making a TV show is a terrible grind — especially back in the day, when shows were entirely made up of standalone episodes. So it’s no wonder that so many classic shows reached for the same handful of plots, over and over. Here are 12 storylines you’ll find in every old science fiction and fantasy show.

Oh geez… the Female Dominated Society. Except it was always absolutely nothing like what a real female dominated society would be like. It always wound up being watered-down-until-suitable-for-prime-time dominatrix scenarios – i.e. still obviously written by guys. But yes, every show you can imagine has done it. Even Gene Roddenberry did it with the second iteration of Genesis II, a.k.a. Planet Earth, and Diana Muldaur was the leader of the F.D.S., rather hilariously so. Didn’t look like she could believe she was up there saying/doing these things.
