  • Story: A Coast Guard Rescue Team discovers a boat in Lake Huron, but the crew cannot be found. Alpena Police Detective Richard Hoskins joins Lt. Perry Ballencek in the probe into a series of missing boats. Mayor Sven Olafson asks Hoskins and Ballencek to finish quickly since tourism season kicks off with Riverfest, which is days away. The fishing vessel Bright Day is attacked by unknown forces.

Chapter 4

  • Story: The Alpena RiverFest begins. A large group of rabblerousers riot. Officers put down the riot, and Detective Ballencek interrogates one of the malcontents. The rioter is puzzled when he is accused of being involved in the mysterious deaths and disappearances on Lake Huron. The mother tells the team about her encounter with a strange creature. All law enforcement officers are dispatched to a crisis in Bay City.

Chapter 5

  • Story: Giant zebra mussels begin coming onshore from the Saginaw River onshore into Bay City. The city is evacuated while troops move in to deal with the creatures. As Ballencek, Hoskins, and Richards come into town, they discover a giant mussel on the roadway. While Richards examines it, a looter surprises them, demanding their money and their car. The zebra mussel attacks the looter. Ballencek and Hoskins shoot at it to no avail. The looter is munched. The team leaves for the command center.

Chapter 6

  • Story: Ballencek, Hoskins, and Richards arrive at the command center in Bay City. There's a reprieve as the giant zebra mussels are dormant for the time being. Richards convinces the commander of the operation, Major Elbert, that using explosives to remove the mussels would be dangerous and counterproductive, likely causing more damage than good. A dive team, including Hoskins, is dispatched to find where the mussels are located. The mussels attack the dive team and the team's boat, piloted by Ballencek. The huge number and weight of mussels that attach to the Veteran's Bridge cause the bridge to collapse into the river!

Chapter 7

  • Story: Bay City begins picking up the pieces from the destruction of the Veteran's Bridge. Ballencek was crushed under the bridge, but Hoskins survived. Dr. Richards suggests that massive amounts of chemicals be dumped into the river to kill the giant zebra mussels. The plan appears to be working, as mussels are discovered dead, dying, or easily captured. Hundreds of miles away in Ashtabula, Ohio, a man and daughter are fishing in Lake Erie. The father is dragged into the lake by a mysterious creature. The invasive species have not been stopped.
