Film #090 - Chicken Little (2005)
When I previously reviewed Chicken Little last year, I covered many of the shortcomings in this 2005 Disney CGI animated film. It lacks cohesion, gets way too caught up in pop culture jokes and has far too much music for its own good.
But, as often happens, it has grown on me since then and many of the complaints seem less serious on repeated viewings. Part of that, naturally, is the lower attention level needed when watching at home. But part of it is also that if I like a film, I can forgive its shortcomings in order to enjoy the parts I like. And with Chicken Little, I always liked more than I disliked.
And the promise that I felt Chicken Little showed for Disney Feature Animation has already come at least partly to fruition with the recent release of Meet the Robinsons, a fine production that shows they are, indeed, heading down the right path. If things go the way they seem, Disney will be back in the full-time tradtional animation business in just a couple of years. These two films, the only two to come out from the brief “CGI-only” era of Disney may be seen as a turning point. A misstep, perhaps, but a key moment in Disney history.
